MIME types for Excel documents

Excel documents can be viewed via the internet by converting the data to MIME format. In Excel, there are various extensions, and these extensions have various MIME types. The mime type format is usually divided into two sections using the slash (/) operator.

Some of the MIME types used in excel are shown below, along with their extensions

.xls .xls is an extension found in Microsoft Excel spreadsheet 2003. The MIME type supported by these extensions is application/vnd.ms-excel.

Note: Excel 2007 supports this extension .xls.

.xlsx This is the latest extension in Excel. It is found in excel 2007 and other latest versions of excel. If you create a document in Excel 2007, it is saved with an extension of .xlsx.

.xltx This is an extension used with Microsoft excel templates. The MIME format that supports this extension is the application/vnd.openxmlformats-office document. spreadsheet my.template.

.xlsm This is an excel document that has macro-enabled. The last "m" shows that the file contains macros.

.xlam, this extension indicates the file has an Excel macro-Enabled Add-in data.

.xlsb this is an extension for the Excel Binary Workbook file.
